Marquette University - John P. Raynor, S.J. Library is three stories plus a lower level and a bridge that connects the new library to the existing Memorial Library. The area of Raynor and connecting bridge is 124,674 square feet. There was also a little over 60,000 square feet of renovation done to the Memorial Library.
The building design is contemporary but clearly echoes the gothic architectural tradition of many of the existing buildings on campus. The exterior of the building consists of brick and granite with some architectural precast. The building has a significant amount of vision and spandrel glass. In some areas there are up to three stories of articulated glazing. The west wall of Raynor is curved with an exterior radius of 196'1.5", which gives the building an interesting, more modern look.
The main granite entryway opens up to a two-story atrium that is surrounded by glass on the second floor. The large open space gives the library a very open feeling and also draws attention to the two main staircases on either side of the atrium. Off of the second floor is the bridge that connects the new Raynor with the existing Memorial. The bridge has a cafe and reading areas where students can come and relax. |
