Building information modeling (BIM) offers design and construction firms many powerful benefits, including a vast database of information, constructability evaluations and more. But the benefits of BIM don’t end once the building is finished. Facility managers have found great value in using BIM to help streamline and manage the operation of their buildings.

According to Autodesk’s white paper, “given the impact of the country’s aging population on the healthcare industry and by extension healthcare facilities, one of the major challenges that healthcare organizations face is recouping their costs for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) programs.” Savvy healthcare executives and facility managers have discovered that the rich spatial information contained in their building model can allow them to accurately calculate the percentage of floor space used to deliver healthcare services to CMS patients. In fact, up to 20% of a healthcare providers total reimbursement could come from their facilities.
