Devon Coffey: Driving Development in the Kansas City Market

Our vertical integration makes us unique within the commercial real estate industry. In addition to a full staff of development, architecture and construction experts under one roof, we have a client-centric, holistic approach for delivering projects. In many instances, it begins with our development associates who find and pursue real estate opportunities across a variety of sectors including office, industrial, multifamily, retail, higher education and government. For the Kansas City market, that associate is Devon Coffey

As a real estate manager, Devon specializes in finding and buying properties for clients/investment partners that wish to invest in the Kansas City real estate market. Discovering and developing properties for clients and/or partners is her passion—one she found after some trial and discovery of her own.

A few years back after achieving her undergraduate degree, Devon worked at a law firm and was considering law school. Instead, she got her MBA and was recruited by a grain company as a cross-country grain trader, which she did for 11 years before shifting gears again. “I learned a lot being in the legal and grain industries, but I wanted to do something I loved," said Devon. “I was drawn to real estate and knew that's what I wanted to do, so I went back to school and got a master's degree in entrepreneurial real estate from the University of Missouri at Kansas City."

Meanwhile, the real estate market was heating up in Kansas City. Recognizing the opportunity, Joe Downs, vice president & general manager, became engaged in the market. But his office was 250 miles away in St. Louis, so he needed boots on the ground in Kansas City.

Three years ago, Devon started at Opus as an intern and went on to become the manager of real estate in Kansas City. She was instrumental in getting the Kansas City office's development efforts up and running. Working closely with Joe, she manages a multitude of development pursuits in a very active market.

“Devon came to us with a lot of maturity and professional business sense," said Joe. “She has a great deal of passion for real estate, Opus and the clients and partners we serve. All these qualities are invaluable in her position."

“We call potential real estate projects 'pursuits' until construction starts, and the process can be two years in the making," said Devon. “There's always a lot going on with multiple deals and properties under contract while working through negotiations with the city and sellers. The ultimate goal is to never miss a deadline and see the project through to the end – and we do just that."

Devon is able to handle many pursuits at once because she's organized. “I'm a list maker and tracking things carefully helps me multitask and cover a lot of bases," said Devon. “I feel fortunate to have landed with Opus in this vibrant and active Kansas City market."

In addition to her role at Opus, Devon is a member of CREW and volunteers as part of the communication committee for the Kansas City chapter. She is also an active member of the Urban Land Institute and is active on the organization's Women's Leadership Initiative, which promotes women and helps them get noticed and ahead in the real estate industry.
