Focusing on Design in Student Housing

7/9/2014

With five student housing projects currently under construction, we’re seeing a continued demand for amenity-rich housing options near campuses across the country. Read what our experts have to say about the various aspects of these unique projects.

Today’s student housing reflects the social trends of their university communities. Our student housing design concepts respond to this by creating a community. Because these apartments will become homes for students, we believe they should provide the luxuries of “home.”

As we work on a student housing project, we consider a few different aspects to ensure a successful, unique project.

Differentiation

“What differentiates our projects?”

This especially applies to the amenity spaces where we need to create the wow-factor that will draw students in. Time, budget and durability are ever-present concerns that require creative solutions. Research of the local demographic, culture and community drive the design.

Amenities

Across our student housing projects, we’re seeing must-have lists of amenities, including laundry facilities, fully-furnished units, private bedrooms and bathrooms, fitness centers, club rooms and on-site management staff.

Unit Furnishings

The bedroom and living room furniture is far from the lofted bunks of the past, with upgraded leather sofas and stainless steel finishes. The furniture includes beds, study desks, task chairs, sofas, media cabinets and barstools.

We’ve found benefits to furnishing the units. By providing furniture, we’re offering a functional layout designed specifically for the space and needs of the student. The elimination of personal property is also a benefit for the management staff.

With each student housing project, we have the opportunity to provide a unique, custom building for students to call home.

Our certified, in-house interior designers work in collaboration with our project team from the beginning to create beautiful living environments. Their student housing experience includes projects such as ArborBLU, The Station on Washington, The Foundry and Venue at Dinkytown.
