With continuing expansion on the horizon, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) will be relocating nearly 500 employees to a new property in Itasca, Ill., from its current location in Elk Grove, Ill. With extensive design-build experience in corporate and healthcare administrative offices, AAP enlisted Opus Design Build to construct a 183,603-square-foot, state-of-the-art headquarters.
The AAP is a professional membership organization of 64,000 primary care pediatricians, pediatric medical sub-specialists and pediatric surgical specialists dedicated to the health, safety and well-being of infants, children, adolescents and young adults. AAP’s new headquarters will exemplify the organization’s important mission, with up-scale, modern amenities in an environment that fosters advancement and allows for growth.
Located in the Hamilton Lakes Business Park near O’Hare International Airport, the rectangular and curved building will feature an all-glass façade with 10-foot floor-to-ceiling windows around the perimeter. In the main entrance, a large, open atrium will rise to the third floor, welcoming guests and employees in grand fashion.
The five-story building will be customized to AAP’s needs, including general work space for employees and tastefully designed areas for hosting industry conferences and events. A recording studio and full print shop will further enhance AAP’s in-house marketing capabilities, and a temperature- and humidity-controlled area will protect the organization’s invaluable historical archives and legacy pediatrics records.
Sustainability is a high priority for the AAP; therefore, Opus and VOA will be incorporating many sustainable elements into the design and build of the headquarters.
Providing a foundation for scalable growth, AAP’s new headquarters will accommodate expansion and support the organization’s plans going forward. Completion is scheduled for the fall of 2017.
