The Opus Group® Announces Two Contracts with Iowa National Guard for Facilities in Sioux City and Davenport

11/16/2017

The Opus Group (Opus) announced today two contracts with the Iowa National Guard to design and construct facilities in Sioux City and Davenport, respectively. As entities within the Iowa National Guard, the Iowa Air National Guard will use the 37,000-square-foot facility in Sioux City and the Iowa Army National Guard will use the 87,000-square-foot building in Davenport. A groundbreaking ceremony was held this week for the Sioux City facility.

"We're thrilled to expand upon our work with the Iowa National Guard and collaborate on two buildings that will allow them to be more effective in their important work," said Jeff Smith, vice president, Opus Design Build, L.L.C. "We're confident that our multidisciplinary team will deliver high-quality facilities while maximizing value."

Both buildings will replace existing facilities with modern, state-of-the-art spaces including dedicated areas for specific training programs and improved, more efficient flow for high traffic areas like dining halls and medical clinics. Designed to meet the latest anti-terrorism force protection standards and LEED Silver certification, both facilities will include highly efficient mechanical systems and LED lighting throughout.

The Sioux City facility will be a one-story space located on the current 185th Air Refueling Wing airbase. Designed to serve up to 500 airmen at a time, the building will include space for administrative offices, a dining hall that will be able to seat 180 people, a medical clinic, a kitchen and training rooms. The exterior will also feature a brick precast for increased durability and lower maintenance. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2018.

The one-story Davenport building will feature a brick façade on the front and will be located on a 37-acre site along Highway 6/Kimberly Road west of Wisconsin Avenue. The facility will include an assembly hall, offices, classrooms, physical fitness space, a kitchen and vehicle work bays. Construction will begin in spring 2018 with completion slated for spring 2019.

For both facilities, Opus Design Build, L.L.C. is the design builder and Opus AE Group, L.L.C. is the architect and engineer of record, as well as the interior designer. Opus' previous work with the Iowa National Guard includes a two-building Armed Forces Reserve Center Complex in Cedar Rapids.
